Self-Care: More Than A Buzz Word

Some people cringe when the words “self-care” are mentioned or feel a since of shame for not taking care of themselves “the right way.” Self-care consists of intentionally engaging in activities that promote mental, emotional and physical health. It is a way to keep a flow to your rhythm of being. Are we always good at it? No. Is it something that is a necessity? Yes. You may not always be “good” at it. That is one reason why it is a practice. Release any judgement or shame and start over. Just like the cell phone will shut down if not charged or updated, your mind and body will also shut down if you do not take time to recharge and rest. These are a few tips to get started.

1) Start Small

Self-care is not an all or nothing practice. Incremental changes can be built upon and tend to be easier to maintain. Find something that resonates with you and add it into your routine.

2) Focus on What You Can Do

This shift in thinking can assist in focusing on what you can control in the moment. It may mean instead of 30 minutes of mediation, you start with 2 minutes. You may not be able to take a week-long vacation, take a day.

3) Use What You Have

• Your breath is always with you.

4-4-8 Breathing

Breathe in for a count of 4, hold for a count of 4 and exhale for a count of 8

• Your body is always with you

One Word Intention Walk

Walk for 15 steps and set an intention with each step. It can be as short as a word “love”, “peace” etc.

• Your mind is always with you

Create a mantra

A mantra is a word or phrase that is repeated. Repeat when you need a moment to connect to yourself.

The two major keys to self-care are (1) be intentional and (2) do something you enjoy. Self-care is a lifespan practice meaning it is something that is necessary throughout our lives and not just in the moment. Commit to the exploration.
