Human first. Therapist is the role that we occupy. How we manage stress and cope during a pandemic varies with the person and moment. The picture is one that I took a few years ago while traveling with friends. Traveling is one of my self-care strategies that hasn’t been accessible during the pandemic. That stinks and it really is okay to acknowledge the things ,no matter how frivolous you may think they are, that you miss. It’s also okay to not always be okay. Our experiences as Black people are varied and robust and because of this there is no one thing that will fit all. Therapy typically involves consistent visits and many people set weekly appointments. The length of time one person is in therapy may vary greatly depending upon the person and what is being addressed. Therapy can last anywhere from a few sessions to a few years. Therefore, the 4pm on Fridays that you have your eye on may take as long as a year or more to become open.
Therapy Note: Therapy
A person can attend therapy whenever they want to work on themselves. As soon as you do not feel “like yourself” or if you have things that you would like to process are enough reasons to check in with a mental health professional. Just like going in for an annual physical check-up, it is a good idea to check-up in terms of mental health as well.
